With a child centric ethos and a background in educational excellence, The White House focuses on the long lasting love of learning and encouraging each child to reach their full potential. Julia Millen paid a visit

The White House Prep School is not slowing down. Located in between Balham and Clapham in South West London, it would have been easy for the school to suffer in recent months with the Covid-19 pandemic, but this school has thrived under a new way of learning and has been able to showcase their core values of a family ethos and putting children first. Founded by Mary McCahery in 1985, with an all-woman founding family team and supported by Headmaster, Tony Lewis, the school has a dynamic, proactive approach to not only remote learning but getting children back into the classroom. They are proud to be the first and only school in the area to have welcomed back a full school on a full timetable from 15th June also extending the term by two weeks, to allow children a full half term back in the classroom with their friends.

Named by The Sunday Times as the number 2 top school in London and 16th nationally, the school caters for children from two and a half to eleven years old, and teaches small classes of up to 18 in a beautiful Cubitt designed Victorian villa situated five minutes from Clapham Common and Balham, in the midst of a vibrant community. In keeping with their ethos of bringing out the best in each and every child, they make sure that every child from the beginning of their time at school feels valued and cared for with a special part to play in the everyday life of the school. This approach along with a focus on excellent academics and a broad, balanced and interesting curriculum sees their children achieve the best, and the myriad of senior schools they go onto, Dulwich College, JAGS, Alley’s, Trinity to name a few, reflect this.

If that wasn’t enough, the school has just announced they had acquired the building next door to the school and have been working with award-winning architect, vPPr to create plans for a completely new and sustainable building on the site. The proposed design is for a two-storey unit that will provide a large, double height open plan space and dining hall on the ground floor and flexible focused learning space on the first floor. The rear garden will offer a "sensory and well-being garden", a fantastic addition to their outdoor space. The building will be an attractive addition on the street and built to the highest environmental standards, closely matching the residential houses on the street, and blending in with The White House. These developments reflect the commitment and continued investment from the school and its founders to provide an excellent environment in which their pupils will continue to thrive.
