The international school sector, traditionally dominated by English-taught institutions, is facing a new challenge from the rapid expansion of Chinese schools worldwide.
A recent report by Venture Education, a Beijing-based market intelligence firm, highlights the growing number of Chinese K-12 schools catering to Chinese nationals living overseas.
Julian Fisher, director of Venture Education, suggests that the increasing competition from Chinese schools could pose a significant threat to traditional international schools, especially those operating under a for-profit model. He questions whether these schools have the financial resources to compete with the substantial investments made by the Chinese government and private investors in their own education initiatives.
Fisher emphasises the under-discussed impact of this trend on the global international and private school ecosystem, which is heavily reliant on Chinese students and funding in many regions.
In 2019, the Chinese government outlined its ambitious plans to expand Chinese education globally, including the strategic development of international schools to support Chinese families living abroad while ensuring their children continue to receive a Chinese education.
