Husband and wife, Arthur & Hilary Miller, established Scilly Spirit Distillery in May 2019 on St Mary’s island, in the enchanting Isles of Scilly - the most south westerly point of the UK.
A significant inspiration for their gin stems from a true recorded event in January 1665, when a Spice Trade ship was wrecked off Bishop Rock, which had been carrying peppercorns from Java. So, this is one of the key botanicals in their Island Gin.
Their devotion to their surroundings and total attention to detail is clearly demonstrated by their award winning, “Bishop Lighthouse” inspired bottle design – awarded Best Design & Packaging for Spirits by the prestigious Drinks Business Awards 2019 and a Gold medal by the highly regarded San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2020.
With a total of 6 international awards for their Island Gin, it’s been an impressive first year.
Even their tamper seal was inspired by the local Pilot Gig boats, (a key part of Scilly’s heritage and relevant to their initial inspiration, whereby the survivors of the 1665 ship wreck were rescued by St Mary’s Pilot Gigs), whereby a Gig’s wooden oar runs down each side of the bottle neck, each personally signed too.
Equally attentive and dedicated to their craft, Art & Hils fulfil every aspect of making their Island Gin, from the small batch distillation runs, to bottling, labelling (applying tamper seals and awards medals), packing and dispatch, whilst also managing all sales & marketing.
The beautiful, vibrant, aqua green sea that surrounds the archipelago was the inspiration for their distinctive bottle colour, whilst that same sea is also harnessed for the Island’s water supply which features in every bottle of Island Gin. As a result, you truly experience a little bit of Scilly in every sip!
So, when seeking a truly authentic, delicious, artisan gin, with genuine provenance and the owner’s total commitment, Island Gin certainly delivers!
