Founded by childhood friends Akhil & Archie, Amala Chai is on a mission to bring traditional masala chai to the UK.
Masala chai simply means spiced tea, however, the word chai is often confused with instant chai lattes found in mainstream café chains. Amala Chai is here to change this perception through traditional Indian brewing methods and reconnect ‘chai’ with its roots.
First travelling to India in 2019, Archie & Akhil were inspired by the delicious drink but also the values chai holds in Indian society. Across India, chai is a way of life - it builds communities, boosts general wellbeing and provides a breather from the daily hustle and bustle. Upon returning to the UK, they not only wanted to provide the best traditional masala chai but also to uphold the community values they had experienced in India. They wanted to create a drink that mixes people... and spices. Combining Akhil's family heritage with Archie’s street food experience, Amala Chai launched in Jan 2019 and they’ve been bringing a breath of fresh air to western chai ever since.
Returning to India last year, they travelled across the country to directly source ingredients from farmers whose families have been growing tea and spices for generations. From the misty tea hills of Assam to the fertile soils of Kerala, Amala Chai ethically sources the highest quality tea and spices through sustainable practices.
The spices in a cup of Amala Chai don’t just add depth and powerful flavour, they help to support a strong immune system. Based on traditional Indian ayurveda, the masala (spice mix) has huge health benefits and coupled with Assamese black tea, rich in antioxidants, it’s a warming reviving combination.
