Ryde School

A Breath of Fresh Air Every Day

As a Round Square, PSB and IB World School, Ryde nurtures pupils’ character to help them make a positive difference and embrace all opportunities. L-J Andrew discovers how Ryde provides world class education on the Isle of Wight

For one hundred years Ryde School with Upper Chine, known locally as Ryde School, has inspired both day and boarding pupils for generations. As the only independent day and boarding school on the idyllic Isle of Wight, boys and girls aged 2 ½ to 18 enjoy excellent academic teaching alongside a wide range of extra-curricular activities.

Priding themselves on supporting the high ambitions of their students, Ryde School offer a diverse range of extra-curricular sporting activities to build well rounded, resilient and confident pupils. Popular activities, such as netball, cricket, rugby and hockey are regularly played against schools on and off island, with other character-building activities such as football, athletics, croquet and riding on offer. As a key pursuit for the school, Sailing is built into the curriculum with beginner to elite sailors thriving at Ryde. The focus on extra-curricular activities results in students who are ready to embrace both the challenges and opportunities they are presented with throughout their lives.

Boarding pupils reside between two new boarding houses within the 17 acres of beautiful school grounds. Younger boarders are roomed in a sensitively renovated Victorian villa, whilst the stunning new purpose-built boarding house, with stunning sea views, is designed to prepare older students for university and adult life. Both houses have multiple common rooms and study areas which support the sense of community and relationship building. Students spend their weekends learning to paddle board, go-karting or simply enjoying long walks on the beaches with one of the boarding house dogs. With their spare time, Barbeques and football are regular pursuits as well as cooking and, more recently, beekeeping.

Day pupils vary from local Island families to those travelling to the school daily from Portsmouth and the surrounding areas via the hovercraft service. Boarding options include full, weekly and flexi with a diverse boarding community including around 13 different nationalities. Parents embrace the weekly and flexi boarding option, enabling them to live on the island or nearby and commute more widely. Breakfast and supper clubs alongside school buses across the island enhance the flexibility for pupils.
