David Mark Lane, artist / architect, was born in Hartford, Connecticut, USA... He grew up in a nomadic family... with roots in Burlington, Vermont, USA. David holds a Bachelor of Environmental Design from the University of Colorado at Boulder. After working and living in Vail, Colorado, and Scottsdale, Arizona... David moved to Santa Barbara, California to continue designing buildings...The Santa Barbara chapter of the American Institute of Architects honored David with an Honor Award in the year 2000... for his design of the Guest House at Bella Vista Drive, Montecito, CA, USA. David currently has a single family residential design under construction in Paso Robles, CA, USA.
David is skilled in architectural design and illustration. He uses pen and ink and colored pencils to begin his architectural sketches... he then scans his sketches, and imports them into Photoshop to enhance them for presentations. Eventually he discovered that he could create some interesting artwork using Photoshop.
Today his paintbrush is Photoshop. He manipulates images, and textures digitally... He distorts pixels; blends colors and forms to create artworks that often feel painterly. Techniques he has evolved; invent a new media, that he likes to call 'primitive digital'. He exhibits his digital artwork on paper, fabric, wood and metal. He says... “you can really appreciate the 'pixel play' in the extraordinary details and glitches, when my work is printed large... ”
When asked for an Artist Statement... David offers... “the universe is chaotic... my 'digital explorations' often create abstract artworks that seem to portray that chaos ...I am not trying to communicate an idea... just trying to express... to be expressive...”
David is an active member, and former Board Member of Santa Barbara, California's Abstract Art Collective.
