Edinburgh’s famous fossil shop was founded in 1987 by fossil hunter Stan Wood. Owner Matt Dale began as manager before buying the business in 2006. It has forged an international reputation for quality and value, and Matt travels widely to carefully select stock from all over the world.
The shop takes a while to explore, but we encourage browsers, and are more than happy to answer any questions you may have. We make sure there is something for everyone, with shark and dinosaur teeth to capture the imagination, beautifully preserved fossil fish, ammonites, and trilobites, hundreds of millions of years old. There’s always plenty of choice, but we’re used to sourcing specific requests, and our website only carries a small percentage of what’s in stock, so it’s worth asking if you can’t find what you’re after.
Aside from the many fossils for sale, there is a wide range of colourful minerals and crystals. We’re always buying with an eye for the collector so there are usually a good number of rare stones to be found, and our meteorite selection is larger than it has ever been. Our jewellery range began with amber, but has expanded over the years, though we try to keep the focus on the stone or fossil, rather than the setting.
The shop is set in the city’s historic Grassmarket, in the centre of the Old Town – a beautiful place to explore. If you can’t visit in person, have a look through the website or give us a call.
