Within a world where we race to keep up with the next best technological bell and whistle I maintain an old-fashioned affair with paint. Oil paint. Love, longing, and the fluidity of time shape the poetic landscape paintings I make, so too, my belief in the power of nature to heal. My paintings are sites of refuge and rejuvenation, hospitable, embracing and transformative. Their narrative flows from my work with a limited palette that began 35 years ago, while studying with noted landscape painter Richard Mayhew. Cadmium yellows and reds, Alizarin Crimson, French Ultramarine, Cerulean and Manganese blues, and Titanium white colour my gestural and atmospheric paintings that animate the physical landscape in which I stand, and the interior landscapes of my experience.
Like the Karate Kid of my generation, in the dance that is paint on paint off my work begins with marks that respond to the call of branch and brush, but their ethereal sensibilities emerge in present moment attention. Stylistically, my paintings both yield and resist representation and abstraction. Conceptually, on the spectrum between the actual and symbolic, wherever the viewer takes their visual rest, in my paintings landscape becomes metaphor.
