Hugh Chapman is a self-taught English sculptor who is gaining recognition in the UK, with worldwide interest in his work.
Chapman turned to art as a career after sustaining a traumatic head injury and meningitis as a teenager. This brain injury was to trigger a series of events that formed the man and the thinker he has become.
His work is inspired by an appreciation of the natural world in which he found solace when he was coming to terms with his head injury. He is on a never-ending quest to translate his thoughts of, and emotions about, this world into other worldly forms that align with, and complement, the world our home; work that has a positive psychological impact and engages in a dialogue between man’s practises and nature’s dynamics, rhythms and systems.
The rhythmical interplay of finely sculpted edges and surfaces in Chapman's work has a unique beauty which is at odds with much of contemporary art. These detailed and highly considered forms are highly demanding on him physically and mentally and also the foundry men. The vast amount of time put in to these works and low edition numbers mean his work is very exclusive.
Chapman is experimenting with different materials and ideas, will not become complacent and aims for his work to evolve over time, like a living organism.
Chapman’s work is at home not just in the gallery. His work is ideally suited to the larger home or garden as well as corporate and public spaces. He is open to commissions and is very keen to make larger, bolder works on a much greater scale; he has a keen interest in working with space and how sculpture can interact with its surrounding environment and the people within it.
