After years of working in fashion, Gemma re-discovered painting during the first Covid 19 lockdown. Not being able to reach her beloved ocean during lockdown made her passionate to bring the magic of the ocean into people’s homes, where ever they may be.
Now able to absorb herself in the stunning Cornish coast again, she paints to try to convey the sheer beauty of the beaches of Cornwall. With her art studio being on the doorstep of various iconic shorelines, she spends hours sketching, walking and swimming in the ocean. Mesmerised by the immense power of the waves and the colours that appear in the deep waters, she paints so that people can feel the sea spray on their skin and the sand between their toes.
Her pieces are characterised by their myriad of colours and textured movements capturing aerial views of the Cornish shoreline. Texture is her signature, using sea salt and sand in acrylic paint to build depth and movement to iconic wave breaks and beach locations.
The destruction and pollution of the waters that surround us is at the forefront of a lot of people’s minds of late. A percentage from each sale through Gemma’s website goes towards the environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage to help their important work. By painting the beauty of the ocean, she hopes to help raise awareness to protect them.
Gemma has been featured in British Vogue, The World of Interiors and Coast magazine. She has collections available to view in galleries across the South West of England and has had work exhibited in both the UK and the USA. She holds regular solo shows in Newquay, so if you would like to view her work or discuss a commission contact her through her website to book an appointment.
