Gabby Malpas’ art has spanned over three decades, three countries and has been a long slow burn since graduating from the Otago School of Fine Arts in Dunedin, NZ 1986 with a major in ceramics.
Gabby now works with liquid colour on paper and canvas in Sydney, Australia. Her works are a lavish feast of colour: florals, Chinese porcelain, Asian textiles and a myriad of hidden items - drawing the viewer in for a closer look, and with a narrative that challenges the traditional Chinoiserie genre.
As a Chinese adoptee raised by white parents, it took until Gabby was 48 before she was comfortable enough to make works centered on her unique life experience and heritage: “I wanted to make works that were true to my style, had important messages but were made with love, respect and a little bit of humour that binds us all”.
Gabby’s larger works are often commissioned pieces that have been made for clients all over the world. Gabby consults with the client on sizes, colours and even important personal items to be included in these very personal projects – usually managed remotely.
As an extension of her art practice, Gabby licenses work globally. Her work adorns a diverse range of products. Gabby says: “I love seeing how designers interpret my work into products that fit their brand. There’s a freshness and aesthetic that I just don’t see by myself so I think they do an amazing job of bringing my work to life”.
Gabby’s work is found in private and public collections worldwide.
