".....instead of performing on piano, I encapsulate the performance through my art."
Elizabeth Mikellides is a Greek-Cypriot artist currently based in Surrey, UK. Interests in music and art were important and present from childhood and at one time becoming a professional pianist was seriously considered. However, Elizabeth went on to study a visual arts degree in Drawing at Camberwell College of Art and then an MA in Fine Art Media at The Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, London.
It was during the honours degree in Drawing that Elizabeth found a way to finally combine her love for both art and music whilst investigating what the practice of contemporary Drawing, in its own right, really was.
Upon completing her studies, Elizabeth moved abroad to Belgium pursuing a career in teaching and focused on starting a family. A return to the UK in the last couple of years has made it easier for her to pick up where she left off and she is very much enjoying an art practice she calls 'Drawing Music'.
The compositional structure including note value and colour is revealed through artworks in a vibrant and contemporary manner. Choosing to work mostly digitally, work is produced on Chromaluxe and as limited edition fine art prints. It is not a painterly quality that is sought after but an accuracy akin to musical composition and it is by working with software programs that allow Elizabeth to achieve such specificity.
Her work has been featured in Tatler this year and collaborations with musicians are planned along with exhibitions later in the year in London and Surrey.
Artworks featured here include Bach's Prelude In C and the theme from Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. Bespoke services are also available for those wanting to see their favourite piece of music translated into visual form.
