Caroline Jones is a British artist and sculptor based in Los Angeles, California. For her latest series “Formations,” she journeyed into the Mojave Desert to paint and sculpt the ancient, monolithic and immovable rocks of Joshua Tree. This work was recently featured in “The British Invasion,” an excellent show at MOAH CA, alongside notable greats like David Hockney and Derek Boshier.
The middle child of a British Military family, she grew up travelling between boarding schools and different bases in Europe and Asia. At 18, she began painting in the streets of Gibraltar and Spain, and used the bohemian life of an artist as her schooling.
She spent a decade in Asia painting landscapes, people, and their cultural identities. She exhibited and sold extensively in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, London and New York.
In London and Italy she turned inward; and her journeys became ones with stone. She had her two children whilst completing a diploma in ornamental and architectural stone carving at The City and Guilds of London Art School. She moved to Los Angeles in 2005. “Los Angeles had laid fallow in my unconscious like a dream I hadn’t had.”
“I sculpted portraits in marble, icons of feminine and masculine strength. I was influenced by the art deco tradition of early Hollywood and the structural vigor of the industry.”
The light and environmental influences of Los Angeles, and the disruption of motherhood inspired me to create "The Pool series".
The dry hot bed of light illuminated this amniotic fecundity and the disintegration of form in water.”
“My sculpture began to explore the more amorphous state of being – flesh folds in stone, tension and strength mixed with soft curves and metal chains. The Strong and the feminine.” The chain and stone work led into commercial displays for Hoorsenbuhs Jewelry. Other commercial and commissioned work included private memorials for the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, animal sculptures and bronze portraiture in granite, marble and bronze. Her Fine Art has continued to be exhibited and sold by galleries, museums and collectives in the United States of America, Europe and Asia.
