The New High School Principal

22.08.23

Meet the new SJI International High School Principal
“If it is to be, it is up to me.”

This inspiring motto encapsulates the philosophy of Mr Bradley Bird, the new high school Principal at SJI International. Stepping into his role this summer, Mr Bird brings with him over 29 years of experience in education.

Hailing from the vibrant city of Melbourne, Mr Bird’s relocation to Singapore (forgoing the offer of a Principalship in a local High School in Melbourne) was in support of an exciting career opportunity for his wife. The family’s decision led to a new chapter for them all here on the little red dot, and as Mr Bird fondly recalls, "my first impression of Singapore was that it was just so beautiful and green…I could immediately see us all being happy here"

With an extensive teaching career that spans nearly three decades, Mr Bird's passion for education is evident. Having spent 24 years teaching in Catholic schools, his diverse experience shines through. "As a young fellow, I was passionate about and excelled at sports... unfortunately, I sustained a severe injury that subsequently changed the trajectory of my university journey," he shares. This event instigated the move into education, where he excelled in teaching, and developed a particular fondness for business education due to its real-world applicability.

Before joining SJI International, Mr Bird made significant contributions as the Head of Secondary in another international school in Singapore. His transformative leadership fostered a holistic approach to education, uniting academics and well-being. Reflecting on this journey, he emphasises the importance of "fostering an environment that empowers students to excel exceptionally."
At the heart of Mr Bird's vision for high school at SJI International lies a steadfast commitment to student well-being. He highlights three essential components – academics, emotional wellbeing, and social connection. "Students have to sleep well, exercise and eat well... to be able to learn and function well," he notes. Recognising that a supportive environment is crucial, Mr Bird emphasises the need for a holistic approach that welcomes and celebrates diversity as our challenging academic environment extends well beyond the four walls of the classroom.

“SJI International is a world-class school in my opinion, and I’m committed to building upon the many unique opportunities that already set us apart, as well as focus on opportunities to further expand them” he shared. “I’m looking forward to getting to know the wider SJI International community, who are clearly passionate and supportive of the school and contribute to the exceptional experiences we are collaboratively able to provide our students - ensuring each and every student meets their maximum potential.”

Guided by the Lasallian values of Faith, Community, Service, Excellence and Respect, Mr Bird resonates strongly with the values of respect and community. "Respect means respect for yourself, for the people around you, and respect for your family," he asserts. His belief in unity and collaboration is evident as he underscores the significance of community in nurturing personal growth. In fact, during tannoy announcements and school assemblies, he always ends his remarks with, "Together, we are better."

Mr Bird encourages students to embrace responsibility and seize every possible opportunity, ensuring the school continues to develop intrinsically motivated students who serve others and give back to the community. His personal advice to them is "If it is to be, it is up to me."

This message underlines the importance of empowering students to use their own initiative and seek guidance from those around them.

Reflecting on the path that led him to SJI International, Mr Bird recalls a moment from 5 years ago, when he was actually living in a condominium near the SJI International campus. One morning, standing on the balcony of his 18th floor apartment, he gazed across the skyline and stopped at SJI International, envisioning a potential future there.

Today, as the High School Principal, he is determined to serve the community and lead the school to similar great heights.

Three fun facts about Mr Bird:

- He helped deliver his son in the car at 2:30am on the way to the hospital.

- One of Mr Bird’s favourite historical figures is Nelson Mandela because of the
sacrifices for his people and the legacy he left behind.

- A trip Mr Bird would love to take is a pilgrimage to Camino de Santiago, Spain. This pilgrimage consists of walking a total of 680km however, there is an option to choose specific sections instead. Mr Bird would love to do the part of the pilgrimage that covers the inside of the French border.
