The King Opens Cambridge’s Landmark New Whittle Laboratory

27.07.26

His Majesty The King has officially opened the University of Cambridge's New Whittle Laboratory, marking a significant milestone for British engineering, innovation and sustainable technology.

The £58 million facility has been created to accelerate the development of next-generation technologies across aerospace, energy and defence, with the ambition of dramatically reducing the time it takes to move pioneering ideas from research to real-world application.

During the visit, The King met with leading academics, researchers, government representatives and industry figures to learn more about the laboratory's vision for transforming the UK's innovation landscape. The new centre aims to shorten technology development cycles from years to just weeks through advanced testing capabilities, rapid manufacturing techniques and closer collaboration between academia and industry.

The visit also marked a return for His Majesty, who broke ground on the project in 2023 during his first official engagement following his Coronation. As Prince of Wales, he had previously visited the Whittle Laboratory on several occasions and has long championed partnerships between scientific research, industry and sustainable innovation.

At the heart of the new facility are two specialist centres designed to support breakthrough engineering. The Bennett Innovation Lab will lead a series of ambitious research missions intended to generate entirely new industries over the coming decade, while the National Centre for Propulsion and Power will provide rapid testing facilities capable of significantly accelerating the journey from concept to prototype.

The laboratory has been designed to foster an agile, collaborative culture, bringing together multidisciplinary teams with access to cutting-edge manufacturing and testing technologies inspired by the speed and precision of Formula One engineering.

Coinciding with the opening, Cambridge also hosted the inaugural Frank Whittle Summit, bringing together leaders from global engineering firms, technology companies, government and academia to explore the future of British innovation.

Representatives from organisations including Rolls-Royce, Boeing, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Siemens Energy joined discussions focused on advancing the UK's capabilities in aerospace, clean energy and defence. The summit also highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence and autonomous laboratories in transforming how complex engineering technologies are designed, tested and manufactured.

Sustainability remained central to the event, with the launch of the Hatton Professorship of Sustainability also recognised during the celebrations. Established to commemorate The King's Coronation and his longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship, the new academic position is supported by a £7 million endowment funded by Trinity College, the Hatton Trust and the University of Cambridge.

As Britain continues to invest in research and advanced manufacturing, the New Whittle Laboratory is expected to play a pivotal role in positioning the UK at the forefront of engineering innovation, helping develop technologies that will shape the future of aviation, energy and sustainable industry.
