Around 83% of Year 6 students in England received their first-choice secondary school, leaving 17% considering appeals. However, only 20% of secondary school appeals succeed.
Appeals are possible if a school's admission policy was applied incorrectly or if the child would suffer greater harm by not attending than the school would by accepting them. Strong appeal grounds include special needs, health issues, academic potential, travel difficulties, or emotional reasons with evidence.
Parents should accept the offered place, join waiting lists for preferred schools, and research the appeal process. Oversubscription appeals follow similar guidelines, requiring a strong case to succeed.
