The recent break-in at the home of Raheem Sterling, has yet again, shone a light on the need for the right protection for our homes. Security expert and managing director of Brook Security, Terry Roffey shares his sage advice
Footballers and celebrities have long been targets for criminals, due to them living their life in the public eye, meaning we know where they are going to be at different times and for how long they will be there.
Whilst we aren’t all footballers or celebrities, we can learn from their experiences when their homes and families have been targeted because of their visibility and predictability.
Not many of us will be featured in glossy magazines or “Through the keyhole” type programs, but there’s a lot we can give away unintentionally on social media. For example, people post about their proudest purchases, such as new cars, a new house, new watches and jewellery and also broadcast their location, taking snaps on city breaks and holidays.
People who live in luxury homes, drive expensive cars and own high-end products will attract attention. Some of the public will be inspired to want to achieve that level of success and others will see you as a “target”, thinking about how they can steal the things you have.
We had a client followed home from a shopping trip who was wearing nice clothes and expensive jewelry, driving a nice car. When returning home, and with half a million worth of vehicles on the drive, the police who were following a criminal gang became aware of their new target. They had followed the gang who was following our client.
Recently when talking on BBC News I highlighted “Layered Security”. Relating it to layers of clothing we wear; the more you wear the warmer you are. You can also change the amount you are wearing for comfort. Security is the same. So, starting with fences, gates, hedges, lighting will form part of the layers to help keep you safer.
Further Electronic Security comprising of External Detection Systems, CCTV Video Surveillance, Intruder Alarms, Hold Up Alarms are the extra layers specialists can supply. Assisted by Remote Monitoring with a Guarding Response, and Police Response as required.
At Brook Security, we install defenses such as Physical Security of locks and bolts, Safe Rooms, fogging technology to fill areas with harmless smoke, security shutters and grilles, are all obstacles that can be put between you and any undesirable intruders. Creating time delays to allow for Police and Guarding Response to get to you.
These principles can be used in all situations. It’s the scale and depth that will vary depending on the premises and risk of burglary or robbery for the homeowner.
Businesses can also be viewed in much the same way, so high-end businesses (Jewelers, Car Dealerships and others) will have the same considerations. Keeping their staff and stock safe and secure.
