Berwickshire High School in Scotland, one of the first state schools to ban mobile phones in classrooms, has seen improved student behaviour, reduced bullying, and higher exam results since implementing the policy in 2020. Headteacher Bruce Robertson attributes these positive changes to the ban, citing a rise in students passing key exams.
Education Secretary Jenny Gilruth has allowed schools to enforce phone bans but has not mandated a nationwide policy. A 2023 OECD report highlighted how smartphones were distracting Scottish students and worsening learning outcomes.
Calls are growing for a national ban to address Scotland’s declining academic performance.
