Manhattan Penthouse Reimagined By Taconic Builders

Taconic Builders completed the interior renovation of a 7,100-square-foot, three-level penthouse at One Madison, a landmark residential tower on Manhattan’s skyline.

Spanning the 58th, 59th, and 60th floors, the project required precise planning and coordination to execute construction at height, within an occupied building.

The defining feature of the renovation is a two-story custom stair, engineered and fabricated as a solid steel structure. To overcome delivery constraints, the stairs’ undercarriage was divided into sections sized to fit the building’s modest sized service elevator, then reassembled onsite through precise bolting and welding. This structural backbone supports curved walnut-clad stringers, with solid walnut treads and risers detailed with custom nosing.

The railings demanded equally careful execution. The outer face was wrapped in walnut, while the inner face was fabricated in bronze, patina-dipped to achieve an oiled-rubbed effect. A bronze cap rail completes the assembly. Along the stairs’ length, a half-inch curved Starphire glass guardrail was set flush within the walnut stringer, anchored in a bronze shoe, achieving both transparency and stability.

Beyond the stairs, Taconic reconfigured the residence to enhance flow and highlight its doubleheight windows, which capture sweeping views of the Empire State Building, the rivers, and the Manhattan skyline. Custom millwork, wide-plank flooring, and large-format stone installations were executed with exact tolerances, while mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems were upgraded and discreetly concealed within walls and floors. The result is a seamless finish where advanced infrastructure supports the residence without disrupting its architectural clarity.

From demolition through final detailing, the project reflects Taconic’s ability to navigate structural challenges, complex logistics, and high-finish requirements at the top of a Manhattan tower. The result is a penthouse that not only exemplifies New York luxury but also demonstrates the builder’s technical expertise and uncompromising standards of execution
