Living In The Dream

Abode2 explores how luxury, eco-friendly home creators, Baufritz, took the Neumann family’s dream home and made it reality

Art collectors and dog lovers living in the countryside and yet close to the city, this is the Neumann family lifestyle. After spending many years living in cities across Europe and Asia, it became more important for them to have a retreat that felt like home and at the same time brought the outside into the house. This was the task Baufritz was faced with.

The clear, cubic structure of their design solution was a 200 square meter, Bauhaus style single-family house, that blends into the coastal park-like forest landscape.

The homes living flat roof and "Scala" wooden façade, deliberately left in its natural state, blends with the surrounding splendour. In accordance with the Baufritz principle, only biologically sound and healthy building materials were used, with both floors precisely tailored to the individual needs of the family.

The spacious ground floor library with customised ceiling high shelving, adjoins the generous kitchen/dining and living area. A discreet sliding door creates the connection to the practical side kitchen with an additional door to the carport. The technical room, right next to the utility room, also has access from outside. There is even a private yoga and fitness room when there is not enough time to go to the gym after work.

Living in a unique house with a view is also defined by the two seating windows: in the library, engrossed in a good book, with a view of the floor-to-ceiling shelves or the enchanting landscape outside the window, in the living area with a view of company at the dining table, delicious meals and the magnificent greenery.

The home is filled with art from all over the world, sculptures as well as photo art, acrylic on truck tarpaulin and high-quality prints. With these selected pieces, a very private "art museum" has been created, which, like the whole house, is underlined by a unique lighting concept. The skilful symbiosis of inside and outside is complemented by two terraces on staggered levels in front of the living area and the library respectively.

Those who travel a lot have seen a lot, these experiences highlight details that are then considered essential for your own home. For this client for example, it was the luxuriously spacious dressing room with daylight on the upper floor, as an extra room adjacent to the bedroom; the electric designer towel dryer with real wood in the bathroom, but also architectural and craftsmanship finesses such as the straight staircase from the ground floor to the top, the round handrails, the French balcony, and the glass parapet wall on the upper floor. There are also practical details such as canopies over the terraces, the roofing from the carport to the entrance area and the separate tool shed, which are so important in everyday life.

Accustomed by his work with professionals and granting people freedom and trust, the client also gave the Baufritz lighting designers’ team free reign. The choice for all light sources in the house has fallen on the durable, sustainable luminaires from “Heimatlicht”. They knew that putting art in the right light in a colour-fast and gentle way and staging the objects unobtrusively requires special skill and experience.

The lighting designers even thought about nature conservation and the numerous insects that live on the site: a filigree lighting solution was deliberately chosen for the outdoor lighting that emphasises the design language of the wooden façade and does not irritate the insects at night.
