A stunning Grade II Listed historic property, which was the birthplace of Flora Sandes, the only woman to serve as a soldier during World War I.
Situated in Nether Poppleton, York, Priory House was originally built in 1750 and retains many original features and later 19th Century additions as well as all the mod-cons expected in a 21st Century property.
Flora Sandes served as a member of the Royal Serbian Army in World War I. Initially a Royal Ambulance volunteer, she travelled to Kingdom of Serbia where she enrolled in the Serbian Army. She was subsequently promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major and, after the war, to captain; she was decorated with seven medals. Born on 22nd January in 1876, Flora was the youngest in her family. The family moved from Nether Poppleton when Flora was nine years old to Suffolk.
Spread across three floors, the five-bedroom 2,538 square foot home has real kerb appeal with sash windows and a striking blue front door. Internally, high ceilings, original fireplaces, ornate carvings and wood and latch doors add a touch of history and character throughout. The ground floor offers an array of reception rooms with two well-proportioned rooms at the front of the house, each with log burners. The quarry stoned hallway leads to a third reception room with an original range cooker and window seat providing lovely views to the garden. The kitchen features limed oak fitted fitted units with a granite worktop. Upstairs, the first floor provides a spacious master bedroom with a walk in dressing area and ensuite, alongside two further bedrooms and the second floor offers two further bedrooms with plenty of storage space. The winding garden is abundant with mature bushes and trees complete with a brick-built summer house, brick outhouse and log store.
Nether Poppleton is a prime village on the outskirts of York and is situated a short distance from a range of shops and services in neighbouring Upper Poppleton including a mini supermarket, doctors surgery, several pubs, primary schools and a train station linking York and Harrogate.
