Julia Millen spoke to local architect, Robert Towell about living the dream in the Cayman Islands

Living on the water’s edge, enjoying the warm breeze, the sound of surf and the turquoise and sky blue colours that are indicative of eternal summer are privileges enjoyed by the lucky few.

The Cayman Islands stand out among their island neighbours for their high standard of living and progressive outlook: these islands welcome foreign investment and, with no restrictions on foreign ownership, they have become a desirable destination for retirees, holiday beach home owners and, increasingly, those able to work remotely.

"The beauty of building a home in Cayman is that you can choose between oceanfront or canal front," says local architect Robert Towell. On the other hand, for those who want to spend their free time cruising, fishing or diving, a home on the canal allows you to moor your boat just steps from your door."

Towell is the creative force behind many of the islands’ most striking homes and hotels and is widely considered to have pioneered modern, minimalist designs in Cayman. He was also among the first to embrace seamless indoor/outdoor living designs and continually innovates with ground-breaking concepts that maximize his clients’ waterfront living experiences.
