Conceived in 2016 in Richmond, London, the original CURVE Bench for the indoors was designer Nina Moeller’s answer to an exciting proposition.
Re:Centre, a unique art, yoga and wellness centre in Hammersmith, London was looking for modular seating for its expansive riverside event space. Starting with the client’s vision of a circle of seats that would allow its visitors to feel embraced while encouraging a sense of togetherness and peace in this centre’s light, open room, Nina drew inspiration from the natural environment to devise the CURVE Bench.
Flowing and sinuous, the smooth curved lines of the wooden bench link together seamlessly, fulfilling the client’s desire for seating that engendered unity and calm. Adaptable as a single seat or multiple units, Re:Centre loved the fluid, original design, as well as the ability to arrange the benches as required.
Responding to requests for an outdoor version of CURVE Bench, Nina and her team worked with respected solid surface supplier HI-MACS to create a piece that would withstand the elements. Wishing to replicate the novel, striking design of the original wooden bench, they found they could thermoform HI-MAC’s latest hard-wearing, recyclable material into curves. What’s more on a practical level, the material is easy to clean, meaning the bench will look as good in ten years as it does today. And, in keeping with the original, adaptable design, CURVE Outdoor can be used as a single seat or joined with other units – its ability to be bought alone or in multiples remains a key benefit.
With both CURVE benches, Nina and her team have created pieces of furniture that are elegant, innovative and useful in equal measure. For use in private homes and gardens, hotels, businesses, art galleries and beachside resorts, the scope is vast. The seats’ stunning aesthetic – curved contours giving a light, airy feel to what in each case is a sturdy seat – putting both the indoor and outdoor benches at the cutting-edge of design today, ready to stand the test of time.
