Internationally renowned designer and founder of interior architectural practice, Tara Bernerd & Partners, shares her favourite style influences
Plush elegance or clean lines?
I often layer different materials to achieve both elegant luxury and clean simplicity, but it really depends on the DNA of a building. I always aim to create spaces that are indigenous to their surroundings. The local environment, as well as the people that will use the space, are key when thinking about furnishings, fabrics and accessories.
Favourite city for inspiration?
I’m fortunate enough to travel regularly for my job and am constantly inspired by new destinations. Immersing yourself in different cultures encourages a fresh approach to design. Paris never fails to inspire; Pierre Chareau’s Maison de Verreis a favourite spot and a great example of marrying industrial materials with more traditional residential elements.
London’s standout feature?
London has so much to offer but for me, the architecture is what makes it truly remarkable. I love how historic structures, like Tower Bridge, sit right next to Norman Foster’s City Hall and look totally at ease; it's something so unique to the city. My apartment in Battersea is right on the river with views across London and I never get bored of the everchanging skyline.
Fondest holiday memory?
I travelled to Ravello on the Amalfi Coast and stayed at the brand’s Caruso Hotel which was epic, possibly one of the most beautiful places in the world. It’s a magical setting and on a personal note, it holds many special memories.
No.1 destination on your bucket list?
I’d love to visit Cuba. Not only is it a fascinating place historically, but there’s so much development going on, particularly in the hospitality industry. It'd be very exciting to be part of that.
'Must have' item in your suitcase?
I spend so much time travelling that I have packing down to a fine art. I always travel with Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream, it's a life saver. However, as long as I have my passport, phone and a credit card, I’m usually good to go.
