Gosling Goes

Recent months have seen much speculation swirl around Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes — not about their relationship, but regarding their real estate. Since early 2021, the couple have allegedly been planning on leaving star studded Hollywood. The L.A.-based couple have soured on the city and want to move north, perhaps to Gosling’s native Ontario, Canada, where they can raise their two children well away from the bright lights of Tinseltown.

The recent sale for nearly $5 million of their primary residence of more than a decade — a century-old house in Los Feliz — seems to confirm these rumours.

True to their reputation as one of Hollywood’s most private couples, the Mendes-Gosling Los Feliz sale was consummated discreetly and without any fanfare.

Built in 1926, the Mediterranean Revival-style spread sits on an unusually-shaped corner lot spanning about a third of an acre. The house is surrounded by some of the tallest hedges and bamboo shoots in town, ideal for a high-profile couple seeking privacy. There’s a detached garage with space for three cars, and what appears to be some sort of guest studio or detached office. Various patios and terraces step down to a swimming pool, which is classically elegant in all its rectangular glory.

Mendes acquired the property in 2008 for about $3.2 million, just before she and Gosling made the place their first primary residence together. The roughly 3,900-square-foot house has four bedrooms and four bathrooms.

As for Gosling, he long owned a Los Angeles home of his own. That place, a midcentury modern secreted up a long driveway in Studio City, was left vacant in recent years, while he lived in Los Feliz with Mendes. Records reveal the onetime bachelor pad was also recently sold, in another totally off-market deal, to Hollywood costume designer Mark Avery.

And just like that, the couple are no longer Los Angeles homeowners.

Gosling and Mendes have been looking to leave L.A. for some time; back in 2018, they were outbid on an estate in San Marino, California. While it’s not yet publicly known if they have successfully acquired a Canadian property, the couple is certainly not homeless. Since 2014, the pair have maintained an achingly scenic vacation getaway about two hours’ drive north of Los Angeles, in the quaint Santa Barbara County town of Carpinteria.
