Future Perfect

A game-changing treatment designed to help rejuvenate, firm and tone trouble areas, the revolutionary Emsculpt Neo at Dr Haus Dermatology is fast garnering a loyal following. Laura Henderson investigates.

Perhaps more than ever, the pursuit of the ‘ideal body’ continues to be a hot topic throughout society and in the media. Historically associated with invasive procedures that required significant recovery for sometimes underwhelming results, today’s body contouring treatments are, by contrast, futuristic high-tech, delivering results that are noticeably different while offering patients the appeal of a non-invasive treatment that minimises downtime.

Until recently, traditional contouring technologies were designed to help patients either tone up muscle or to reduce fat. Taking this ‘either or’ aesthetic treatment to the next level however is the pioneering EmSculpt Neo.

This game-changing treatment whose fans range from elite athletes to models and ‘A’ list celebrities, uses a combination of two technologies – radiofrequency heating and high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) waves to deliver both in one unified treatment.

Now the latest addition to a curated suite of non-invasive, high-tech body sculpting treatments on offer at Dr Haus Dermatology, the clinic was the first on Harley Street to offer the revolutionary EmSculpt treatment back in 2018, which has since become one of its most in-demand body sculpting treatments.

Supported by more than 20 clinical publications, the recently launched advanced EmSculpt NEO is a serious ramp up from the original treatment with the addition of radiofrequency to permanently destroy fat, making this a unique 2 in 1 treatment. Improvements to the delivery of high intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) waves build more muscle. This makes it uniquely capable of delivering even more impressive results for both muscle growth and fat reduction, whilst opening up treatment to higher BMI patients than previously possible.

The treatment works by emitting both high intensity electromagnetic and radio frequency energies at the same time to trigger deep muscle contraction that’s not possible through standard physical workouts alone (equivalent to 20,000 crunches). Meanwhile, advanced radiofrequency heating causes the muscle temperature to raise by several degrees, preparing the muscles for exposure to stress, similar to a warm-up. In less that 4 minutes, the temperature in subcutaneous fat cells reach between 42-44°C, ensuring they are permanently damaged before they are naturally expelled from the body over 12 weeks.

While undergoing two treatments at once may seem like a lot to handle, the treatment is not only bearable, but actually quite enjoyable. You can visibly see your stomach and leg muscles contracting, while the periodic knocking sensation that kicks in every few minutes disperses any build-up of lactic acid. During the 30-minute session, the radiofrequency energy heats the muscles to the point of apoptosis, or cell death. My therapist dialled the intensity from 0 to 100 (I hovered around 80 for most of my first session but got to 100 for the last five minutes; during the subsequent three sessions, I spent the first 10 minutes at 90, then went up to 100.

Having the heat makes the contractions easier and warming up the muscles allows for a more effective treatment, as they’re very synergistic. Five different body areas can be treated in total (including thighs, abdomen and arms). There’s zero downtime and results can be seen two-to-four weeks after your final session. And I did – subtle but noticeably different – with my legs and stomach – certainly more contoured. Better still, there’s no muscle ache to contend with post session which is a major plus. Perhaps

the most important thing to remember about the treatment however is that your start point will determine your end point, so if you're training in the gym and enjoying a healthy diet, you're more likely to see definitive results.
