Its name derives from Captain William Lyford Jr., who was awarded the land by Royal Decree from King George III in 1788. The modern history of the island began in 1954, when Bahamian developer Sir Harold Christie sold the 2,800-acre parcel of land to Canadian businessman E. P. Taylor. Trained as an engineer and a successful developer, Taylor enacted his vision to transform what was then dirt roads and swamps.

As one can imagine, the property market in Lyford Cay is extremely active and without a huge amount of inventory - buyers will need deep pockets.

About 30% of the residences are occupied year-round while the other 70% are used as vacation homes.
