When a Sardinian five-star hotel engaged Harrods Interior Design to redesign its penthouse, our experts created a beautiful one-of-a-kind space, where heritage meets luxury and sophistication. Embedded into the area’s cultural context, the suite features exceptional architecture detailing and bespoke interior furnishings with sweeping views of Hotel Cala Di Volpe’s renowned coastline.
Designed by French architect Jacques Couëlle, and built in 1963, Hotel Cala di Volpe is the epitome of laid-back luxury. It curves around the coastline in a series of irregular-shaped tiled houses of varying shapes, sizes and pastel hues. Inside, the spaces are cave-like, with roughly hewn whitewashed walls, terracotta accents and furnishing that is sourced from local artisans. Right at the top, The Harrods Suite captures the hotel’s rustic luxury – but also stands apart as uniquely Harrods. Gently layered raw and refined elements come together to entice the senses: arched solid-wood doors are carved to resemble sunbeams; bronze patinated alcoves cast ambient light over the beds, designed exclusively to create serene and warm relaxation spaces; and a fluted limestone feature wall mirrors the landscape’s natural curves. The three-bedroom suite includes a vaulted wine cellar hosting a selection of desirable and exclusive wines and spirits, a cigar humidor, an elegant marble cocktail bar and a private rooftop complete with an infinity pool & al fresco dining area.
Each design feature reinterprets ideas of comfort and grandeur; the soft curving edges of the walls combine with the atmospheric hidden lighting design, simultaneously luxurious materials, such as bronze textured glass and burnished finishes, create depth & warmth. Bespoke detailing brings art into the space, not least glass wardrobe doors hand-painted in swirling deep greens and sapphire blues, flecked with 22kt-gold fragments. And on the private roof terrace, a raised infinity pool, sunbathing deck and alfresco dining pergola provide sweeping views over the nearby coastline. Designed with entertaining in mind, the terrace also includes a kitchen service area in the form of an organic Marmo di Orosei stone bar, complete with backlit onyx champagne basin.
“This was a special opportunity to amalgamate two iconic brands, combining Hotel Cala Di Volpe’s Sardinian indigenous luxury with Harrods excellence. Our focus centred around creating experiences that can be had in the Suite, from enjoying a glass of wine fresh from the cellar in intimate nooks to hosting candlelit dinner parties on the private rooftop. Very special, but also offering all the comforts of a second home. In the design gently layered raw & refined materials come together to entice all the senses, creating a unique embodiment of elegant living.” Letitia Fitzgibbon, Head of Harrods Interior Design
