Breaking The Ceiling

28.04.23

With the popularity of maximalism right now, new luxury developments are adding eye-catching touches to their lobbies in a place that's often overlooked - the ceiling. Making a statement and welcoming residents with unique design, bold ceilings not only add dimension but elevate a space.

Abode2 visits a selection of new luxury residential buildings that are adding statements to the ceilings in their lobbies through contrasting architectural details or distinctive artwork, making each lobby stand out and offering a more modern approach to traditional ceiling decoration.

Madison House

Madison House, a new condo tower and tallest residential building in NoMad, evokes a new standard for luxury living with stunning interiors by Gachot Studios and striking architecture by Handel Architects. Signaling to the building's location in the heart of the design district, Madison House features unique, custom artist-designed accents in the foyer. Residents are welcomed by a garden-framed, double-height lobby with a sculptural painted ceiling lattice that echoes the pattern of dragonfly wings.

The Cortland

The Cortland is a NYC-based development in West Chelsea designed by two of the world's leading architectural practices, Robert A.M. Stern Architects and Olson Kundig. The lobby’s double-height ceiling is dressed in marble imported from Italy and features a one-of-a-kind onyx light fixture designed by Markus Haase. The unique art piece was designed specifically for The Cortland’s lobby, creating a stunning, eye-catching element as you enter the building.

Tribeca Green

Designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, Tribeca Green offers an incredible residential experience from the timeless exterior to the reimagined interiors by the acclaimed firm. Tribeca Green’s 273 stylish residences, many of which have floor-to-ceiling corner windows overlooking Teardrop Park and the Hudson River, are enhanced by tailored amenities and unparalleled services.

The lobby itself is like a jewel box made of wood, with a concise material palette that emphasizes the complex natural beauty of the materials and references the neighbourhood’s many parks. Wood permeates the entire space in the form of wood panelling on both walls and ceiling, punctuated by metal portals, trims, and details.

The character of the lobby is the result of careful studies on multiple historical precedents – the grand salons of 1930’s luxury cruise liners with its streamlined, modern art deco interiors, great New York city residential lobbies and French interior designers from the 1920’s and 30’s. The result is an elevated space that feels contemporary yet grounded in the evolutionary history of interior design – a sort of abstracted classicism that is the DNA of RAMSA.

Four Seasons One Dalton

The tallest residential tower in all of Boston and New England, Four Seasons One Dalton features a luxurious private residents' lobby designed by Thierry Despont that provides an immediate statement upon arrival. The distinct coffered ceiling in rich mahogany creates a wooden jewel box experience — a feature inspired by classic townhouses in Boston's Back Bay and the nearby Trinity Church, an important city landmark. A sumptuous, custom-designed fireplace framed in red travertine stone completes the space. Complementing the gorgeous design by Thierry Despont, developer Carpenter & Company tapped Boston-based art consultant Kate Chertavian to curate a collection of gallery-worthy art for the lobby.
