Beautiful Basins

01.05.19

Concrete basins are fast becoming a must-have addition to the most stylish kitchens and bathrooms, but not everyone considers the art and skill that goes into producing sleek and handcrafted sinks. Luke Thomas chats to Claire Pedley, director of The Poured Project about the beautiful basins her and her husband Andy are producing

How was The Poured Project conceived?

Andy’s primary trade had been as an antiques restorer, and he also designed and handmade bespoke furniture, and I was a foster carer for 10 years.

In 2016, a client asked Andy if he could create a concrete basin for him. We spent a lot of time researching the process and mix required and created the basin. The client, who is the owner of Bert & May, absolutely loved it.

We then became the sole supplier of concrete basins to Bert & May (as Pedley Basins), forming The Poured Project as a limited company in April 2018.

Why concrete?

Concrete firstly very durable, but it’s also flexible during the design process – we have almost unlimited style possibilities when creating our basins. As it starts in a liquid form, we can produce great variety in shapes.

We design and make our own moulds out of wood on a lathe, so in addition to our product range, we’re often commission to produce extremely creative and unusual basins. We haven’t said no to a project yet!

What influences the design for each basin?

Our first product was our round basin – the inspiration from this actually came from having children. It needed to be deep and easy to use for every member of the family. It’s vital for us that all of our basins are not only aesthetically pleasing, but practical too.

We also work a lot on colour schemes. It’s possible to dye the concrete using pigment, and this actually works beautiful to create standout pieces. The dye actually permeates right the way through the concrete mix, so if you were to cut one of our basins in half you’d see that the colour is consistent throughout.

Tell us a bit about the process of creating the basins.

We spent a lot of time researching what additives would make the perfect mix – it must be durable, water resistant, flexible and as light as possible. Our basins actually typically way around 8kg, whereas others often weight around 12kg.

We’re also able to create a variety of different finishes on our basins, and we have such control over the process that we can now dictate the size of the air bubbles within the mix. This lets us get really creative – from no air bubbles at all for a really smooth basin, to fairly large air bubbles, then filled with a concrete mix in another colour to create a truly unique basin.

What’s upcoming for The Poured Project?

We currently work with six retailers, and we’d like to expand this to up to 15 in the next few years. We don’t want to stretch ourselves too thin however, as we’re a small operation and we want to make sure we maintain our quality.

We’re also keen to work with more architects and retailers, as we love collaborating on larger projects.

Most excitingly though, we’re looking to introduce two styles of concrete bathtub. We already have the plans create, and hope to introduce the range this year. We’d actually be the first UK based producers of concrete bathtubs – people are currently having to import them from overseas.
