The University and College Union (UCU) warns that up to 10,000 university jobs could be lost this academic year due to severe funding gaps in UK higher education. 5,000 job cuts have already been announced, affecting both academic and support staff.
Falling numbers of international students—a key revenue source—due to stricter visa rules have worsened the situation. Universities, including Sheffield and Cardiff, are cutting staff to address financial shortfalls, with some institutions also closing courses.
University staff and students have voiced concerns over job security and declining education quality. Protests and strikes are underway at several universities. The UCU is calling for emergency government funding, while the Department for Education (DfE) insists it is working to ensure long-term financial stability.
