Grade 11 student Saachi of SJI International has made a remarkable debut as a children’s author with her self-published book, The Girl of the Grey, a story that goes beyond entertainment to promote self-acceptance and mental well-being.
The picture book follows a young girl who struggles academically and begins to doubt herself, whispering, “Maybe I’m just not that smart after all.” Through a journey filled with kindness, courage, and empathy, she learns that her greatest strengths come from embracing her unique self.
Saachi’s motivation for the book stems from a desire to address the pressures faced by young people today, particularly around academic achievement. “I also feel like it's so important to accept and love who you are and all the different, unique parts of yourself,” she explains.

In a powerful act of service, Saachi is donating 100% of the proceeds from her book to Limitless, a Singaporean charity supporting youth mental health. She collaborated with 13-year-old Arianna Dattani Joshi for the illustrations, creating a story that resonates deeply with young readers and encourages them to celebrate their individuality.
Launched in October to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Month, The Girl of the Grey has already received national recognition, featuring in The Straits Times and topping the newspaper’s Weekly Bestsellers (Children’s) list.
Saachi hopes her story will leave a lasting impression: “When you grow up with stories, it sticks with you for a really long time, and I feel like this is a really important message to grow up with. You can grow up with the pride of loving yourself and being able to accept who you are.”
Through this achievement, Saachi embodies SJI International’s values of service, community, and excellence, inspiring her peers and demonstrating the power of compassion and courage.
