ASHBERG HOUSE, CHELSEA

A historic London street has welcomed a unique new arrival, featuring bespoke ceiling-to-floor glass walls that bring ‘lateral living’ to a townhouse.

Like the 102 carat Ashberg Diamond, once part of the Russian Crown Jewels, Ashberg House is unlike anything this part of the capital has seen before and is the epitome of high-end living.

Created by Morpheus, the new-build property is set over five floors and designed in a modern style to include a plethora of glass, black basalt and bronze details – providing a contrast to the classic Georgian homes that surround it.

Closed off from the street, the forecourt to the home is designed in sheets of black basalt, with a fortress-like automated garage door and pedestrian door in bronze. These offer the home owner the utmost in privacy and discretion.

Once inside though, there is open space and light abundant.

“Our goal was always to be generous with light everywhere in the house, creating this connectivity to outside,” says Andrew Murray, the founder of Morpheus Design. “With this creation we intended to bring lateral living to a townhouse, which I feel we have achieved.”

More than 90% of the home’s furniture was custom-made by Morpheus, curated to sit seamlessly within its surroundings. Due to the sheer size of each room, every item has been ‘scaled-up’ so no pieces get lost in the space.

In putting together the layout, Morpheus worked with a Feng Shui expert to ensure an ‘auspicious’ quality with bedroom suites and furniture placings bringing positive vibes to the home.

The front doors open onto a wide entrance hall which sits on the ground floor in relation to the street but third from the bottom of the home. The property offers an elegant welcome which incorporates custom designed full height bronze fins that revolve to reveal the formal reception room and elevated garden terrace beyond.

The centerpiece of the entrance is the first of two sculptural chandeliers which were designed to capture the essence of Ashberg House’s relationship with natural light and the external environment. The falling leaf motif of the chandeliers links the smaller entrance hall feature light to the stunning sculptural installation hanging in the double height atrium.

The spacious lounge, dining area and kitchen lie below the ground floor, but due to the glass façade which stretches the height and length of the entire rear of the property, it has an exceptional level of light. The glass wall opens to a stunning subterranean garden which allows sunlight in without being overlooked by neighbors.

The kitchen area comprises bespoke, hand-crafted, fitted cabinetry complete with granite worktops and Gaggenau appliances. There is also a separate supporting service kitchen features further high specification appliances including a larder freezer and steam oven.

A focal point of the room is the Chevron Dining Table, exclusively designed by Morpheus, crafted from a harmonious mix of vellum and calacatta oro, with a dark walnut lip. But the pièce de résistance is the climate controlled, 245 bottle wine wall designed in a bronze finish.

At the lowest level of the property is the swimming pool and spa offering a zen-like tranquillity. A full length riven Brazilian black slate wall descends into the water and a black polished ceiling was installed, inspired by esteemed sculptor Richard Wilson’s permanent and site specific installation 20:50 in London’s Saatchi Gallery.

Through the heat-controlled door the floor leads out into the gym and the adjacent home cinema featuring a state of the art TV screen with HD projection and B&W surround sound, whilst large comfortable, bespoke designed sofas in plush dark grey velvet recline electronically.

Going back upstairs – via the hydraulic passenger lift – the 1,250 square foot master bedroom takes up the entire first floor featuring a hand-crafted feature headboard running the full span of the master bedroom wall. The substantial marble master bathroom an MGLW encapsulating the bath and a double vanity with suspended mirrors aligned in front of the window.

The bedroom also leads to a bespoke designed walk-in wardrobe, out onto its own private terrace and onto the sleek leather-clad office. On the two floors above are four further elegantly designed bedrooms.

“The design of Ashberg House has always been as much about functionality as it is aesthetic,” says Andrew. “From day one, we did a lot of work assessing how every single space would be used and questioning the journey people will take around the home.

“With a new build like this we were lucky in that we had the time to finesse every details, whether that be with the construction to ensure we have the best use of space –something which is especially important in a townhouse.”

The home is not just a feat of design, but of engineering and technology. Ashberg House features fully integrated audio-visual technology throughout the home including Lutron controlled curtains, speaker systems in every room, and multizone heating controls.

Ashberg House has achieved Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4, owing to its higher standards of sustainable design. The plant room features a Central Heating and Power Unit (CHP), efficiently producing electricity from gas, whilst a Rainwater Harvesting is used to supply irrigation to landscaped areas.
