Paltrow’s Teenage Dream-home

30.11.20

Gwyneth Paltrow spent her teenage years in a grand New York townhouse, now the Upper East Side house where the actress and GOOP founder lived is listing on the market for $15.5 million.

At age 11, Paltrow and her family moved from California to New York. She attended the Spence School, a private, all-girls school in Manhattan.

Paltrow’s owned the townhouse that is located just off Fifth Avenue on the Upper East Side, from 1984 to 1992, according to public records. Records shows that since the 1990s the current owner is Anne Nickel Curtin.

In 1891 architect Walter Reid, Jr. designed and built the home for his father and was designed in the popular Renaissance Revival style. Over the five floors, 7,200 square foot, the town house has six bedrooms and six wood-burning fireplaces in line with the Renaissance Revival-style of the home. The house also boasts a wet bar in the large wood-panelled library. The formal dining room has a butler’s pantry and a deck. An eat-in kitchen leads to the garden, which has a fountain.

Because of its exquisite location just east of Fifth Avenue in the middle of a block with low townhouses to the north and south, this house benefits from the most extraordinary light at all times of the day and during all seasons. In addition, as it is 20 feet wide, it has very high ceilings and exceptionally large windows which allows sunlight to flood into the building for ever-changing light as the day passes.

The main entrance is on the garden level, where a large, grand foyer welcomes you. From here, is the cosy eat-in kitchen.

This level opens to the magical rear garden, which has climbing vines on its brick walls, a tiled fountain, and incredible landscaping that even includes an orange tree.

On the parlour floor, a formal landing opens to the front-facing living room and rear dining room, the latter of which has a wood-burning fireplace, a butler’s pantry with a separate stairway from the kitchen, and a deck with a staircase that leads down to the garden. The living room has yet another wood-burning fireplace (there are six total throughout).

On the third floor, you will find a wood-panelled library (complete with a wet bar), as well as the primary bedroom that has his-and-her dressing rooms, both with adjacent en-suite bathrooms.

There are two more en-suite bedrooms on the fourth floor, one of which opens to a private terrace. Also on this floor is a laundry room. Two more en-suite bedrooms are on the fifth floor, along with a third smaller bedroom.

The house has retained many of its original details, Ms. Del Nunzio said, and has been "meticulously maintained."

Ms. Paltrow, 48, is the daughter of actress Blythe Danner and the late producer Bruce Paltrow. After graduating from Spence, Ms. Paltrow attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, but dropped out to pursue acting, according to Ms. Milano’s book. Ms. Paltrow won an Oscar in 1999 for her performance in "Shakespeare in Love" before launching Goop, a popular lifestyle and wellness company.
