Labour’s interim curriculum and assessment review suggests cutting the number of GCSE exams to reduce student stress and reconsidering the English Baccalaureate (EBacc), potentially phasing it out. While this may offer students more flexibility and access to creative and vocational subjects, experts warn it could worsen the already low uptake of modern foreign languages, especially in state schools.
The review acknowledges the burden of exams but avoids recommending a return to coursework, citing concerns about the reliability of results. Primary assessments like SATs will remain, despite criticism from unions.
The report also emphasizes the need for a more inclusive and diverse curriculum, improved support for disadvantaged and SEND pupils, and greater focus on digital literacy, sustainability, and practical life skills. Final recommendations are expected later this year.
