Trends may come and go, but ­fine craftsmanship lasts a lifetime. Jane Adams, founder of online furniture tailor AUTHOR, explains why we should invest in our home for the future. By Stephen Penn

All too o­ften people aspire to have ‘clean and simple’ living spaces, which o­ften translate to a bland and muted colour palette. It’s a trend the team at AUTHOR, the online furniture e-tailer, are working hard to shake-up, offering collections that evoke emotion, strength and that essential ‘wow’ factor.

Led by Jane Adams, who founded the company in September 2017 a­fter an 18 year career in interiors, the brand is passionate about making a statement with their pieces - which are designed and made in Britain.

Through their website, AUTHOR’s ever expanding collection showcases items in contexts, giving the viewer the confidence to understand the piece and how it could fit into their home space. Each collection is named a­fter an author, character or book title and tells a story. In doing so it inspires clients to find the right piece that matches their own innate style and tastes.

“We champion furniture and interior pieces that embody the ideals of timeless design – enduring classics to be loved for a lifetime,” says Jane. “We want customers to invest well in these ‘lifetime’ pieces that have been made sustainably and responsibly by talented cra­ftswomen and men across the UK.”

The latest collection, Brontë, is a refreshing and welcome antidote to the greys and neutral tones so commonly associated with ‘calm and restful’ spaces. ­The collection offers a sophisticated style that is feminine, self-assured and doesn’t shy from colour or pattern. “

“The jubilant blue of the Mergus chair and the tan leather of the Gymkhana stool table contrast beautifully against the cool grey of the Arkham sofa,” explains Jane. “­The Mary velvet chair and wallpaper adds a lively, finishing flourish to this tasteful collection. ­The abstract design of both the velvet and the wallpaper is based on a collaboration Blackpop, the designers, had with the National Portrait Gallery and its Tudor paintings, using motifs from the paintings to create something contemporary with a wonderfully unique story behind it.”
