British heritage paint brand Little Greene is redefining what it means to be truly sustainable in interiors. With recycled and reformulated paints, eco-conscious production, and a dedication to craftsmanship, the family-run company proves that luxury and responsibility can coexist.
At the helm is Ruth Mottershead, Creative Director and third-generation custodian of the brand. Growing up surrounded by colour charts and visiting the Snowdonia factory where Little Greene’s paints are still made by hand, Ruth developed an early love of hue, pattern, and texture. Today, alongside her brother Ben, she continues the family legacy, combining artistry with a commitment to sustainability.
Little Greene’s collections draw on over 300 years of decorative history, reviving colours and patterns from past eras for contemporary interiors. Their signature Colour Scales allow subtle tonal shifts across walls and woodwork, while colour cards and consultancy services make creating cohesive, inspiring spaces effortless. Collaborations with the National Trust further strengthen their heritage credentials, restoring historic palettes while keeping them relevant today.
Beyond interiors, Ruth is championing the use of colour outdoors and ongoing environmental initiatives, from wildflower meadows around the studio to waste reduction in production. For her, inspiration is everywhere—in stone, forest, and the changing light—reminding us that colour can transform not just a room, but the way we feel within it.
With Little Greene, design isn’t just decoration—it’s atmosphere, heritage, and a quietly powerful way to make a house a home.
