On 7 May 2025, the Education Committee published a letter to the Education Secretary urging clarity on what the government is doing to address the growing crisis in higher education. This follows an April evidence session with key sector figures, including Sir Philip Augar and representatives from Universities UK, the Russell Group, and the University College Union.
Committee Chair Helen Hayes MP warned that long-term financial pressures have pushed many universities toward potential insolvency, threatening local economies, student wellbeing, and academic research. She stressed that even without full collapse, ongoing cuts to staff and courses are already harming the sector.
The Committee is pressing for details and timelines on government reforms and support measures for universities.
