As part of our long-term relationship with Harrods, Ian Raymond, Head of Mortgage Sales at Standard Chartered Bank, quizzed Letitia Fitzgibbon, Head of Harrods Interiors, on her approach to the industry.
Letitia has a strong commercial awareness and understanding of the London property market to compliment her design flare and expertise.
Is there a particular design style you would recommend for investment properties?
With investment properties it’s important to keep the property’s target-market in mind. To accommodate any potential occupant or buyer, a neutral backdrop works best with a focus on high-quality products, textures and materials to capture their attention and use artwork and decorative accessories to bring the space to life, without relying on fads. The design scheme needs to be flexible enough to allow for the occupant’s own personal touches, whilst revealing a lifestyle to aspire to.
Describe the creative process
Our approach to design is very considered; we refer to it as more of a journey than anything else. This journey begins with the study of the project’s historical context and, when designing for the client’s tastes, their lifestyle, which allows us to create a unique narrative through the language of design. Throughout this journey our aim is to create spaces that perform their functions brilliantly and evoke emotions.
Is there anything exciting that you’re working on at the moment?
We are currently working on a stunning project in a listed building in Belgrave Place. We’re carrying out an extensive refurbishment within two apartments, set over five storeys. We’ve incorporated the property’s timeless Georgian architecture into the detailing within the interior architecture and design scheme, whilst modernising it in subtle ways through the flooring, joinery and hard finishes.
What advice would you give to someone who is looking at carrying out an interior design project?
Think carefully about the overall effect you want to achieve in your space. Create a wish list and make note of any specific details you want to incorporate or problems you want to solve. A good designer will want to collaborate with your vision, so don’t be hesitant to share your inspiration and start the Pinterest-party early.
