Legendary musician Sting has just paid $65.7 million for a penthouse at 220 Central Park South, the Billionaire’s Row building in New York City where hedge-funder Ken Griffin closed on a unit earlier this year for a record $238 million.
The new building, designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects and developed by Vornado Realty Trust, has 116 units, selling for between $13 million and $39 million, according to property records.
Sting bought the penthouse under his real name, Gordon M. Sumner, closing on July 16, according to property records. In 2018, he sold his duplex at 15 Central Park West, another Robert A.M. Stern Architects building, for $50 million.
Clad in Alabama Silver Shadow limestone, Mr. Stern’s signature classic pre-war-style building has an 18-story villa and a 79-story tower.
The development, which has expansive views of Central Park, has an off-street motor court shaded by mature trees, private dining rooms and entertainment spaces, an athletic club and a spa.
Sting, who is 67, was the lead songwriter, singer and bass player for the new wave rock band the Police before embarking on a solo career in 1985. The winner of 17 Grammys, he’s sold more than 100 million records. His single “Every Breath You Take” won a BMI Award for being the most played song in the history of radio.
For his work with the Police, Sting was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for recording and a CBE from Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II for his myriad contributions to music.
In addition to 15 Central Park West, Mr. Stern, the former dean of the Yale School of Architecture, has designed a number of iconic buildings. They include two residential colleges at Yale University and Philadelphia’s Museum of the American Revolution and the Comcast Center office skyscraper, the second tallest building in The City of Brotherly Love.
