Balancing Academia, Creativity and Student Wellbeing at Institut auf dem Rosenberg
There aren’t many schools that offer a plethora of 100 co-curricular courses in addition to five traditional qualifications, but this is the case for Institut auf dem Rosenberg – the Swiss boarding school with an international reputation for doing things differently from any of its counterparts. At Rosenberg, students are empowered to carve out their own path, from the academic choices they make, right through to the dietary plan they set with the resident nutritional chef and the places they can explore beyond the classroom.
What happens outside the classroom is just as important to student’s development as academic teaching, meaning a careful balance between giving students autonomy and providing one-to-one guidance is maintained in all aspects of student life. Take for example, school meals – provided by a team of chefs who come to Rosenberg from top restaurants from around the world. Consistent with Rosenberg’s artisanal approach, vegetarianism, dairy-free, gluten-free and religious restrictions are all catered to, and the regularly changing menu of international cuisine centres around seasonal, local ingredients. Those students with an interest in gastronomy can join the chef team in the kitchen for master classes, to foster an awareness of the culture and art of food – or even opt to take the Culinary Lab course with famed chef, Franck Giovannini, as part of their studies.
The same level of choice applies to sporting activities offered by the school: archery, ice skating, mountain biking and circus training run alongside traditional netball and football classes – with a total of 30 sporting activities available in total. Personal training sessions are also offered throughout the year for students who want to improve their technique with experts in the field. Located at the heart of the Rosenberg campus is the 400 m2 golf training ground, featuring a professional multi-hole putting green and the surrounding Swiss Alps provide the perfect playground for ski trips throughout the winter.
During their time at Rosenberg, students have the opportunity to get out into the wider world, from dog-sledding in the surrounding Swiss alps and Michelin-star workshops in Lausanne at weekends, through to Talent & Enrichment trips further afield to European capitals or even as far as Antarctica – all of which complement their studies and ensure they are global citizens from an early age.
