The Versace family is known for style, and not just when it comes to apparel. The late Gianni Versace's former South Beach mansion was, of course, legendary, and outfitted by the designer with stunning imported furnishings, handcrafted statues, intricate tiled mosaics, and more. Now, his sister Donatella Versace has purchased a vacation villa in Italy for $5.6 million, bringing another fabulous house into the family.
Spread out over 15,000 square feet, the four-story mansion overlooking Lake Maggiore is known as La Verbanella. It features 50 rooms, 20 of which are bedrooms, and boasts a pale pink exterior, according to reports. There’s also a beautiful garden, several balconies, a pool, a pond, and private access to the lake, which sits on the border of Italy and Switzerland.
The abode also has quite a rich history. It previously was owned by the Mondadori family (the founders of one of the largest publishing companies in Italy), who purchased it in the 1920s and welcomed many famous guests over the years, including Walt Disney. Rumor has it that Arnoldo Mondadori requested that all of his guests sign a wall above the fireplace in the living room, but the limited number of public photos of the home make that hard to confirm.
No strangers to luxurious lakeside living, the Versace family previously owned a property called Villa Fontanelle on Lake Como, which they sold in 2008 for almost $40 million. That villa was thought to be one of Gianni’s favorite getaways.
While Lake Como is known for attracting A-list residents like George and Amal Clooney, Lake Maggiore is lower-key, though it is every bit as luxurious, with plenty of massive private homes doting the gorgeous shores.
