One of the most respected and celebrated DJs has shaken the music industry – and the world – with his tragic death last week.
Tim Bergling, the Swedish dance music star known across the globe as Avicii, was found dead in his hotel room in Oman last week. The cause of death is unknown.
His family have since released a statement after his passing at just 28-year-old.
We would like to thank you for the support and the loving words about our son and brother. We are so grateful for everyone who loved Tim’s music and have precious memories of his songs.
Thank you for all the initiatives taken to honour Tim, with public gatherings, church bells ringing out his music, tributes at Coachella and moments of silence around the world.
We are grateful for the privacy during this difficult time. Our wish is that it continues that way.
With love,
The Tim Bergling Family
To pay tribute to this musical genius, Abode2 takes a look at some hot spots across the globe that have been influenced by the life and music of Avicii.
STOCKHOLM
The Swedish-born singer was notoriously proud of his roots, and the people of his homeland shared this adoration, as he was honoured by the Swedish government in 2014 by awarding him the nation's prestigious Music Export Prize. He also performed at Sweden's royal wedding in 2015, alongside fellow Swedish act Icona Pop. Apparently the DJ met Prince Carl Philip of Sweden on a trip to Ibiza, where they first discussed the idea of Avicii performing at the Prince's nuptials to glamour model Sofia Hellqvist.
LOS ANGELES
As with most music powerhouses, if you make it in Hollywood, you can make it anywhere. In 2015, he made waves when he has moved into a 7,000 square foot home in Hollywood, California. The stunning property cost $15,750,000 and came with unbeatable views of Downtown LA, breathtakingly beautiful architecture and plenty of famous neighbours. But his personal connection to the USA goes a lot deeper. In 2012 he donated a million dollars to US-based charity Feeding America in 2012, an organisation which supports food banks and hungry children. The sum was the entirety of the DJ/producer’s earnings from his non-stop 26-date American tour — which was titled House For Hunger in honour of the cause.
IBIZA
As one of the most prolific DJs in history, it comes as no surprise that Avicii is synonymous with Ibiza, the home of dance music. Having performed at every one of the biggest clubs the White Isle has to offer, his signature style and promotion of the EDM (Electronic Dance Music) scene. His presence in the island was so well known that he was even a focal point of the Mike Posner song “I Took A Pill In Ibiza”. The island was so close to his heart that his last performance was a heroic send-off gig in Ibiza in August 2016.
BELGIUM
In similar vein to Ibiza, Avicii took the world by storm with his Tomorrowland sets, performing on the stage in Boom, Belgium, almost every year since 2013. His sets received critical acclaim, giving the EDM scene a global platform and putting on a show that changed the way music is perceived, not just with ears but with all of the senses.
OMAN
The most tragic edition to the list, the singer spent the last year touring some of the world’s most beautiful spots after stepping away from the spotlight in 2016 due to the pressures of fame. As Oman become the final spot on his tour for wellness, it will forever be a part of the legacy of this famed and celebrated musician.
