With the 2016 Rio Olympics in sight - the global spotlight will be firmly back on Brazil following the success of last year’s World Cup. But there’s so much more to this vibrant country than big name sporting events, as Simon Williams of luxury travel company Bespoke Brazil explains.
Rio de Janeiro is the first destination many people think of when planning a trip to Brazil and understandably so. The ‘Marvellous City’ famous for its lively carnival, is the most visually beautiful in the world, with its iconic beaches and natural asset attractions such as Sugar Loaf Mountain and the iconic Corcovado - home to Christ the Redeemer.
The natural wonders don’t stop at Rio however - as Brazil is an out and out nature lover’s paradise. In the south, one can marvel at the awe-inspiring waterfalls at Iguazu which straddle the Argentine and Brazilian borders whilst in the north, the lush, canopied Amazon Rainforest covers vast swathes of the country and gives visitors an unrivalled opportunity to immerse themselves in spectacular jungle habitat- exploring the river and rainforest by boat while kicking back and relaxing in luxury lodge accommodation.
Arguably the best wildlife can be found in the lesser known Pantanal, the largest floodplain in the world. Here resides the largest gathering of birdlife species on the planet. It’s also the finest vantage point in the globe to see jaguars in their native habitat.
The epic hinterland is also home to numerous National Parks including the Chapada Diamantina, ideal for trekking, with ancient caves and remote waterfalls. A former Portuguese colony there are also numerous UNESCO heritage colonial towns and cities, four of the finest being Ouro Preto, Olinda, Paraty and Salvador - complete with pastel-hued buildings and cobbled streets steeped in history.
Last but not least – Brazil is hard to beat for its bounty of beaches from the uber-glamourous Buzios and trendy Trancoso through to the reef off Porto de Galinhas, laid back Jericoacoara and the finest beach in the world - Fernando de Noronha. With luxury accommodation in an array of stunning settings, the country could be the start of a whole new Latin love affair.
