Abode2 takes a behind-the-scenes look with the General Manager of Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht, to unveil the captivating details of this luxurious hotel designed by the renowned designer Marcel Wanders
The Andaz was the Amsterdam’s former public library, can you reveal any interesting facts about the building’s heritage?
Built by Peter Hugeton in 1720, the building underwent a major renovation in 1897 by architect Willem Hamer. It was then used both as a warehouse and an atelier for tailored clothing. Later in 1973, both buildings were dismantled, except for the monumental façade of the Keizersgracht and rebuilt as an office building by Agency de Klerk. Four years later, the building was designated as a public library until 2007 when it was moved to the Oosterdokseiland. The property was then converted into a hotel, and the Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht opened its doors on October 29, 2012.

Describe the hotel decor and what was the inspiration behind the interiors.
The hotel design seamlessly connects the polarities of old and new, while also embodying Amsterdam's reputation as a "melting pot" where people come together and find common ground. The heritage of the surrounding area is also incorporated into the design, with nods to the golden age, Dutch delft blue, tulips, and orange. The design also incorporates references to the knowledge gained from books and stories about old Amsterdam, making the old library an essential part of the hotel. Guests can enjoy a peaceful and immersive experience by reading books, picture books, graphics, and signage. The hotel also showcases video art as opposed to traditional art, recognizing that people often don't have the time to go out and see video art in their regular lives, creating a unique and modern contrast.
