Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney credits her Oxford University education with shaping both her intellect and her outlook on life.
Clooney, who studied at St Hugh’s College, arrived at Oxford in 1996 with a global perspective shaped by her Lebanese heritage and upbringing in London. At St Hugh’s—a college with a historic commitment to women’s education—she honed the curiosity, discipline, and storytelling skills that would define her career in international law.
“Oxford didn’t give me certainty,” Clooney reflects. “It gave me questions I hadn’t even known to ask.” She recalls walking through the quads, absorbing centuries of scholarship while debating ideas with peers from around the world. The experience, she says, taught her intellectual humility and the value of diverse perspectives.
Clooney describes Oxford as a place that encourages individuality and curiosity. “You’re invited to rise to its strangeness,” she says. “There’s freedom, but that freedom demands dedication to your own ideas and purpose.”
Her time at St Hugh’s also inspired her commitment to human rights. Surrounded by peers from across the globe, she gained a deeper understanding of cultural and social challenges, shaping her drive to advocate for justice worldwide.
Returning to Oxford in 2025 as a Visiting Professor at the Blavatnik School of Government, Clooney notes the bittersweet feeling of seeing the familiar buildings unchanged while recognizing how much she herself has grown. “St Hugh’s took a chance on me,” she says, “and it opened my eyes, my mind, and countless doors in my life.”
