A reach Beyond Campus

Throughout all grade levels, students at Appleby College engage in a wide range of Experiential Education with a focus on developing global competencies. This is integrated within classroom curricula, out-of-class academic experiences, outdoor education trips, domestic and international global intercultural learning. Students particularly engaged in this area may complete the Appleby College Diploma with Distinction in Global Leadership, an action-oriented programme for developing global citizenship.

Hands-on experiences play a critical role in helping prepare students to be compassionate, globally aware leaders. Appleby students participate in a global experiential trip that typically includes involvement in social, environmental or community development, combined with examination of the local host culture and geography. In addition, students can attend international conferences and exchanges through Appleby’s partnership with Round Square, an internationally diverse network of 200 like-minded schools in 50 countries on six continents that connect and collaborate to offer world-class programmes and experiences. Finally, students also take part in adventure-based outdoor education experiences at Appleby’s S. Bruce McLaughlin Northern Campus where students challenge themselves, acquire leadership skills and learn to work cooperatively with their peers through authentic wilderness experiences.

Appleby’s Languages programme focuses on developing students’ communicative competence through the four language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. The Language and Culture Department consists of Arabic, French, German, Mandarin and Spanish. Studying languages at Appleby is not only done through classroom instruction, but also through meaningful and authentic activities, task-based instruction, content-based instruction, project-based learning and integrative approaches.

The Boarding Life programme is also an integral component of the Appleby experience. It prepares students for university life and promotes understanding, empathy and inclusion, while encouraging meaningful relationships with a diverse group of students from across the globe. Students from over 40 nationalities and cultures are welcomed to campus each year, and Appleby has over 8,000 alumni living worldwide.

As well as the programming and experiences offered, Appleby recently joined an elite group of schools as the world’s sixth educational institute to achieve the Global Education Benchmark Group (GEBG) full endorsement for meeting the organization’s Global Education Standards. GEBG is the leading non-profit organization of K-12 schools that researches and establishes best practices in the field of global education. Additionally, for the last 10 years, Appleby has worked with World Leadership School (WLS) who partners with K-12 schools in order to reimagine learning and create next-generation leaders on various aspects of faculty professional development.
