A very good number of those who have relocated comment that the work/life balance is one of the greatest advantages of living in Guernsey. The size of the island means your journey to work is typically less than 15 minutes prompting many to walk, cycle or scooter the short distance, leaving plenty of time to fit in an activity before or after work and even pop home for lunch.

The reduced commute adds extra time to your day bringing the opportunity to be more active with a multiplicity of different sports and leisure activities on offer for all ages and fitness levels. A starting point for many is Guernsey’s 29 miles of stunningly beautiful and varied coastline. There is an almost inexhaustible range of water sports to try including kayaking, surfing, boat rides, diving, jet-skiing, windsurfing, kite-boarding, sailing, coasteering, fishing and paddle boarding to name only a few! At low tide, the sandy beaches become excellent windsurf buggy and kite buggy tracks, yet still leave plenty of room for sun-worshippers, mountain-bikers, walkers, runners and horse riders. There are plenty of land-based activities too. The island has a busy schedule of football, tennis, golf, rugby and cricket fixtures and most cater to all ages, allowing parents valuable downtime, or exciting days out together for the more adventurous families.

For walkers and those with canine friends the varied landscape offers breath-taking clifftop paths, rambles through woodland and quaint, timeless country lanes. The island’s rich history provides plenty of intrigue along the way. You will find relics of a privateering past, Neolithic monuments and half-buried bunkers and fortifications from the island’s occupation during WW2. And with each new journey, there are enchanting opportunities to stop for refreshments and rejuvenation. Pause at some of the island’s cosy eateries and seafront cafés and try some of the tempting seasonal cuisine. The rich Guernsey ice cream is a decadent delight on hot summer days and a traditional Guernsey Bean Jar makes the perfect winter warmer.

Those eager for more can venture over all of Guernsey’s Bailiwick. Take the short boat trip to the nearby islands of Herm or Sark and you will discover a car-free existence, spectacular beaches and a warm welcome from their inhabitants. Head further north to the island of Alderney and you will find intriguing Victorian forts on an island that is rich in flora and fauna.
