Twin brothers Christian and Frederik Hendriksen, co-founders of Rensair, have come up with a refreshing, high-tech solution to the challenges COVID-19 has imposed on businesses, properties, and medical establishments. Julia Millen investigates
The idea for developing an air purifying system, far proceeds COVID, when as a child, Hendriksen suffered from severe allergies. His father, an engineer and expert in ventilation technology, set out to find some relief for his son. This project not only helped his son, but led to the development of a hospital-grade patented air purifier used primarily in Scandinavian hospitals for more than a decade.
Today, the entrepreneurial brothers, with an extensive background in business development and finance, have taken their family business to the global marketplace to help others address the challenges of COVID-19. “In the advent of the recent global pandemic, clean air has never been more important, and we wanted to do what we could to help,” says Frederik.
Scientists have now established that airborne aerosols can transmit the coronavirus. Airborne aerosol particles are smaller, lighter and can linger in the air for hours and drift further, particularly indoors, causing potential transmission of the coronavirus. The Rensair air purification system addresses this concern by purifying indoor air.
Christian shares how Rensair works. “The Rensair system uses a powerful fan that pulls air into a HEPA filter, trapping bacteria and viruses and exposing them to a germicidal UVC light. This unique patented solution not only captures but also destroys bacteria and viruses, including the coronavirus family of pathogens,” he says. “Compared with most air purification devices this is a superior solution.”
Frederik notes that Rensair’s key point of difference is in placing the UVC lamp in the middle of the cylinder-shaped HEPA filter. “The UVC lamp works to destroy the DNA and RNA in the bacteria and viruses caught in the filter,” he says. “That means clean air continuously leaves the machine.”
Another key feature of the air purifier is its large cleaning capacity and ease of use. A Rensair unit can process up to 560 cubic meters of air per hour. For larger spaces, multiple units achieve the same effect. Plus the device is unobtrusive and portable, so there’s no need to retrofit current filtration systems. Just wheel the unit inside, plug it in and turn it on.
Leading laboratories in the world have extensively tested Rensair including Eurofins, Norconsult and Oslo University Hospital. They have shown that it’s more than 99.97% effective at removing airborne impurities such as viruses and bacteria.
Sharai Meyers, founder and CEO of Purple Dragon Play, an upscale family members’ club in Chelsea, London, there’s no doubt that this has been a challenging time for every business. “However, it gives you the opportunity to stand back and look at what you are doing and find ways that you can enhance and improve,” she says. After much research, Meyers decided Rensair air purifiers were the right fit for Purple Dragon. “Rensair played a huge part in giving our members the confidence to come back,” she says.
Rensair is used by a number of health services and businesses, including the NHS, GlaxoSmithKline, New York’s luxurious 220 Central Park South residence gym, private aviation company PRVT and Bentley.
When my father first developed Rensair, little did he know that his system would provide such a potent answer to the global health risk of COVID-19. “He only wanted to help me get a better night's sleep.” says Christian. “Today he is proud to help fight the global pandemic and see his two boys bring his life’s work to the world.”
