Work-life balance – The Great Reset

16.05.22

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has prompted so many employees to reconsider where they work and what they do, it’s perhaps no surprise that business leaders are thinking hard about how they can make working life better for both themselves and their employees.

Research from Bupa Global's Executive Wellbeing Index  2021 [1] found work-life balance has been a ‘daily worry’ on the minds of UK senior leaders over the past year. Consequently, they are now taking major steps to restore some sort of equilibrium.

With ‘digital tethers’ making it hard to maintain boundaries, particularly when working from home, business leaders are committing to checking in on work less frequently outside of working hours or even formally managing down their hours. A more regular presence in the office could also be on the cards, one in four leaders agree that spending time with colleagues and conducting business face to face is better for their mental health.

Dr Pablo Vandenabeele, Clinical Director of Mental Health for Bupa Global, explains: “The feeling of having to be ‘always on’ can be damaging to our mental health and lead to exhaustion, stress and burn out, as well as reduced productivity in the long term.  So, it’s important to take active steps to manage our work-life balance. This might mean scheduling hobbies or social events in the evenings to help create boundaries between work and life, or even just switching off your work phone and putting it away when you’re finished for the day. It doesn’t mean you’re not committed or unproductive – instead, it shows you can recognise your limits.”

The ‘great reset’ on work-life balance is also setting a new workplace agenda, with senior executives planning to introduce a raft of measures to help create happier and healthier workplaces. Offering more flexible working patterns, better benefits for parents and increased support for mental health and wellbeing are just some of the actions proposed by leaders as they seek to nurture and get the best out of their people.

Going even further, more than a quarter of senior leaders are considering introducing a four-day working week.

Anthony Cabrelli, Managing Director of Bupa Global, says: Even prior to the pandemic, boundaries between work and life had become extremely blurred. It’s encouraging to see business leaders taking the lead when it comes to work-life balance. We are committed to supporting business leaders and their people by continually investing in and updating our mental health and wellbeing provision.”
